“It is more important to click with people than to click the shutter.” - Alfred Stieglitz
To take better picture one of the first things you must understand is to slow down. Your photography will improve by leaps and bounds if you slow down and process what is going on in a scene. Photography is all about light it takes new students a while to understand that concept.
When you approach a scene you want to photograph think about the light. How bight is the scene? Are there people or things that are moving in your scene? What do I want to convey? It is not as simple a just walking up to a scene, snapping a picture and calling it a day.
When you learn to slow down and think about the light then and only then will you start to see an improvement.
